Billy Reid Costner
Billy Reid Costner, born in Catawba County, NC on December 2, 1938 entered his eternal home May 19, 2025. Surrounded by his loving family, Bill found peaceful rest in the Lord’s embrace. He was the son of the late Hal and Marie Costner.
Bill, as he was affectionately known, shined light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He marked his journey on this earth with love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, his golfing and camping buddies, and his fellow mission friends.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret Roach Costner, a son, Rick Costner (Teresa) of Jacksonville, FL, Lettie Ailey (Randy) of Jefferson City, TN, and Marta Truitt (Bobby) of Lincolnton, NC. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren who adored "Poppa" including Jake Elmore (Megan), Sara Smith (Daniel), Matthew Ailey (Leah), Reid Ailey, Mackenzie Ailey, Zach Costner, Julian Costner, as well as six great-grandchildren, Landyn Elmore, Hazel Elmore, Emery Cofer, Milo Ailey, Caroline Smith, and Chloe Smith. He was predeceased by his sister Dean McRee.
A brick mason by trade, Bill was retired from Duke Energy. Since his retirement 22 years ago, he has travelled with the Baptist Men, helping with building projects spanning Gulf Port, Montana, and Vermont. In recent years, he has helped with building ramps for those in need. Bill always lent a helping hand to anyone, whether it be family, friend or acquaintance.
Visitation is from1:00 PM – 2:30 PM, Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden. Burial will follow at Holly Brook Cemetery at 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to Carolina Caring Hospice or South Fork Baptist Men.
