Charlotte Motorcyclist Dies Following I-77 Crash in Iredell County

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C.— A 41-year-old Charlotte man has died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash Tuesday morning, November 3, on Interstate 77 in Iredell County.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to the serious injury collision at approximately 8:10 a.m. near the 32-mile marker on northbound I-77.

The investigation determined that Hernan Gonzalo Morris Diaz, 41, of Charlotte, was traveling north on a motorcycle when he entered the toll lanes to pass another vehicle.

As he attempted to return to the general-purpose lanes, the motorcycle struck a delineator, causing him to lose control. Diaz was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest in the toll lanes. The motorcycle continued north before coming to rest in the middle general-purpose lane.

Diaz was airlifted by MedCenter Air to CMC-Main Hospital with serious injuries. He later succumbed to those injuries.

The northbound lanes of I-77 were closed for more than an hour while troopers conducted their on-scene investigation.

The collision was investigated by Master Trooper K. Jake Macchia of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
