1948 - Taman Shud Case: The body of an unidentified man is found in Adelaide, South Australia, involving an undetectable poison and a secret code in a rare book. The case remains unsolved.

1953 - Hugh Hefner publishes the first edition of Playboy magazine.

1955 – In Montgomery, Alabama, seamstress Rosa Parks refuses to give her bus seat to a white man and is arrested for violating the city's racial segregation laws, an incident which leads to the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

1958 – Central African Republic becomes independent from France.

1958 - The Our Lady of the Angels school fire in Chicago kills 92 children and 3 nuns.

1959 – Cold War: Antarctic Treaty signed, which sets aside Antarctica as a scientific preserve and bans military activity on that continent.

1974 - TWA Flight 514, a Boeing 727, crashes northwest of Dulles International Airport near Washington, DC, killing all 92 people on board.

1974 - Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 6231, a Boeing 727, crashes northwest of JFK International Airport outside New York City, killing all 3 crew members. There were no passengers on board at the time.

1981 - Inex-Adria Aviopromet Flight 1308, a McDonnell Douglas MD-80, crashes in Corsica, killing all 180 people on board.

1986 - The Musee d'Orsay art museum in Paris opens.

1988 - Benazir Bhutto becomes Prime Minister of Pakistan.

1989 - A right-wing rebel group attempts to remove then-President of the Philippines Corazon Aquino from power in a failed coup attempt.

1990 – Channel Tunnel sections started from the United Kingdom and France meet 40 meters beneath the seabed.

1991 – Cold War: Ukrainian voters overwhelmingly approve a referendum for independence from the Soviet Union.

2006 – A typhoon causes landslides on the Mayon Volcano in the Philippines, burying about 1,000 people.
