Today in History the following were elected President of the United States: 1868 Ulysses S. Grant, 1896 William McKinley, 1908 William Taft, 1936 Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected for a second term, 1964 Lyndon B. Johnson is elected to continue as President, in 1992 Bill Clinton is elected defeating George H. W. Bush, and in 2020 Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump.

1848 - A revised Dutch constitution is announced, drafted by Johan Rudolf Thorbecke, it makes the powers of parliament stronger, while strongly restricting the powers of the monarchy.
1867 - Giuseppe Garibaldi and his followers are defeated in the Battle of Mentana.

1883 - American Old West: Self-described Black Bart the Poet gets away with his last stagecoach robbery, but leaves a clue that will eventually lead to his capture.
1893 - The freight ship Cabo Machichaco explodes in the harbour of Santander, northern Spain. Some of its load included dynamite, and the resulting fire kills 590 people.

1982 - The Salang tunnel fire in Afghanistan kills 2,000 people.
1986 - The Federated States of Micronesia become independent from the United States.
1986 - Iran-Contra affair: The Lebanese magazine Ash-Shirga reports that the United States has been secretly selling weapons to Iran in order to secure the release of seven American hostages held by pro-Iranian groups in Lebanon.
1988 - Sri Lankan Tamil mercenaries attempt to overthrow the government of the Maldives.

2020 - The 2020 United States presidential election was the 59th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. The Democratic ticket of former vice president Joe Biden and the junior U.S. senator from California Kamala Harris defeated the incumbent Republican president Donald Trump, and vice president Mike Pence.
